Evolution of a costume: 'Logan Conall'

Description

Now and then, I (luckily) get a comment that my costumes look cool.

Though the exact wording varies, invariably, I will mention that I don't make that much myself, and all that I had to do, was to invest time (and money). To prove what I've said, I've created this time line of the oldest costume/character that I have: Logan Conall, my ranger.

2007:
The very first version, the starting point. I had almost nothing more than what you see here; the only thing that's missing that I can think of (now), is the sheath of my sword and a few pouches.

From top to bottom:
- The shirt is basically a hoody made from a very nice loosely woven green fabric.
- The cuirass is a poncho with leather sewn to it and closed at the side with buckles.
- The bracers seen here are made from old riding boots, by following a tutorial that I think is lost in the mists of time.
- The pants are basically the same as a pair of jogging trousers, but made from fabric that fits better in a Fantasy setting ;)
- The boots are Dutch army boots.

It's worth noting that from that list, my mother made the shirt, cuirass and pants - from relatively cheap fabric, following patterns she already had. As I said often, it doesn't have to be expensive!

2008:
Of course I improved on how the outfit started. Though barely visible, I replaced my bracers with store-bought ones, gifting the ones I had made myself to the organisation of the LARP event I had so much fun at. It's hard to remember, but I do believe I bought my greaves in this year as well. Finally, I added 'pauldrons' to my cuirass.

2009:
As I said, the green shirt is basically a hoody - as in, the hood was attached. Was, because in 2009 I realised I really needed a bigger hood, and had my mom remove the old one ;) So, one was made from another kind of green fabric, once more by my mother - she has been invaluable throughout the creation of this costume :) Furthermore, in 2009 I invested in some more leather work: short, brown gloves, a bandoleer with small pouches and I believe I needed a new belt. The bandoleer was and still is one of my favourite items - shrewd people will probably recognise it from many more costumes.

If you look carefully, you'll notice the cuirass is darker. That's because I painted it with special leather dye. With a little creativity, even old items can be made up to snuff ;)

2010:
In 2010, I once more added more leather items, once more in cooperation with my mother. To be fair to myself, I did more work this year than I had previous years. Both thigh 'add-ons' were made by ourselves, and I bought the quiver. The quiver wasn't available in brown, so I bought it in a creme colour and dyed it brown. It's worth noting that, even at this point, most of the leather pouches I use were made in 2007!

2011:
Though one of my favourites and though some may not have noticed, I ditched my bandoleer I had used in 2009 and 2010 for this costume. I bought a back sheath for my sword and was 'forced' to attach two different, but similar pouches. Having my quiver on my back just wasn't cutting it, so, I started to wear it attached to a belt around my waist. Missing the bandoleer around my chest, I added yet another old military item - a bandoleer with ammo pouches for around my waist. It, together with the 'chest pouches', are very sturdy and though quite modern, fit in fine with Fantasy, as far as I'm concerned.

Though 2012 has barely started and haven't played Logan yet, I'm already thinking of further improvements, such as different boots and greaves. I think one is never ready with tinkering and I hope I'm of inspiration!

Four years of nerddom left scars in your face. a real man of Words and Fights. Maybe we meet each other in the future as friends and not as enemies on the battlefield.
But enough of those words. Pretty nice improvement. I see its 3 Years ago. I would be happy to see more. Still playing?
